Dammit Exeter, where will I get my laughs next season with out the Boumsong Bramble guaranteed calamity every weekend on MotD?

Who will be this season central defensive calamity?

Boumsong.

Plus I open my big mouth about their combined inability to play football and then Bramble only goes and scores in their uefa cup qualifier to save them from embarassment at the hands of some Latvian minnows!

Actually Boumsong is still around at Newcastle. We've been having trouble offloading him, you'll be surprised to hear.

Oh yeah, I thought he would have gone in the summer but there he is in their squad line-up. And with the number 6 shirt too! Seems like he fits into Roeder's plans! ;)

Dear Dear Me, why didn't they go get a new defender or do they just have to much faith in the duo?

Believe me, we have tried to get rid of Boumsong all summer but nobody wants him. We tried to dump him at Monaco and Marseille but neither of those clubs were foolish enough to accept.

I think whoever said that was probably mocking him, either that or they were on drugs.

I couldnt believe it when Boumsong was called up to the French squad for the WC. unbelievable, though thank god for the sake of football he didnt see any action.

According to wikipedia's entry on Tits Bumble his partnership with Boumsong was known as the Chuckle Brothers Live Show.

Maybe they cant get rid of him because they are still trying to get back some of the £8m they gave rangers for his 'services'!

Yeah, we are asking for £2m. Which should be a real bargain in anyone's book!!

Anyway, moving onto another subject. I want know what you guys think about John Terry being made the new England skip. It's a very good decision in my opinion.

And what of David Beckham?

Not only has he relinquished the captaincy, but he's been left out of squad altogether.

Terry is a good a choice and Becks left out was always bound to happen.

What about Venebles as Assistant?

I'm pleased that Terry is captain, he's a great player and I always prefer to see defenders as captains as I think they have a better overall view of the game from their position.

Personally I think Becks will be back in the squad when we play the proper qualifiers. By leaving him out for the friendly McClaren has sent a clear message to the press and fans that he is not like Eriksson and he wont get drawn into personal relationships with the players. Hopefully!

I'm also pleased to see Venables involved. My one doubt about McClaren was that whilst he is anexcellent coach I questioned his motivational abilities as he always seems somewhat dour. Having Venables on board will give the side a real personality on the coaching side and his experience at international level will be invaluable.

Well, McLaren has said that Beckham doesn't feature in his plans, and in the same week Capello has said Cicinho (WORST PLAYER EVER) is going to start instead of him. So, pretty bad week for Mr. Beckham.

Personally I think it's an interesting move. He is basically going to have to play Gerrard on the right now, and I don't think he is anywhere near as good on the right wing as Beckham.

It's a shame that Ashton got injured, I think he would have deserved to start (which people were apparently expecting). It's also good to see that Hargreaves is going to be given a key role in the England team. I am guessing that nobody saw McLaren picking Stewart Downing too (/sarcasm).

I don't think it was a case of sending out a message. Becks clearly isn't in his plans for the time being. I was trawling through some betting websites yesterday and interestingly alot of companies have him at 3/1 to pull on the England shirt again in any game. So going by that Beckhams England career is over. <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Squire @ Aug 16 2006, 02:48 AM) </div>

Beckham isn't capable of playing on the right wing anymore. He has no pace and his crossing abilities have severly neutered with defenders getting tight on him. If he's going to play anywhere it should in central midfield.

But having said that I don't think he should have been left out of squad totally. He is a always good person to have around because of his experience. Also his attitude and professionalism has always been off the highest order despite his off the field activities.

That's an interesting chant, mainly because of the 2nd line. Based on todays match whenever he tries a 40 yard pass, the recipient is either nowhere near it and the ball flies out of play, or they are offside and would never have reached it anyway. Gerrard should stick to the short passing game (which he is much better at) and stop trying to emulate Mr. Beckham. :P

Anyway, todays match was fairly interesting. Downing actually played...well, which was quite surprising. Ok, so the opposition didn't turn up in the first half, but it was still a good performance. Although Lampard did score a goal, he was pretty anonymous, as was Gerrard really. Ironically, England chose to put play down the left most of the time. I did notice Gerrard popping up in random positions though, even on the left wing at one point. Defoe showed just how good he is, by sending a shot straight off for a throw-in .

Positives of the game for me were:

- Ashley Cole is the undisputed "Best On The Line Defender EVER!".
- Owen Hargreaves is pretty much indispensible to the team.
- John Terry seems ok as Captain.
- The defence was pretty solid, apart from against set pieces.
- We didn't sit back after scoring a goal, although the 2nd half was a classic England display.
- Chris Kirkland didn't get injured!!

Negative:

- England seemed to play well without Beckham (/cries)

Player Ratings according to the Fan service at the BBC at the time of posting:

Robinson - 6.71
Neville - 7.01
Ferdinand - 7.38
Terry - 8.07
Cole - 7.4
Gerrard - 8.23
Lampard - 7.55
Hargreaves - 8.46
Downing - 7.17
Defoe - 6.81
Crouch - 8.12

Bridge - 6.14
Carragher - 6.35
Richardson - 6.58

Also, they gave Fyssas 9.18?

I was well impressed with the performance last night and it was great to see Venables back where he belongs. After being one of Hargreaves' sternest critics I must say I have been particularly impressed with his last few performances, even if he is still somewhat rash going into the odd tackle.

I personally didn't see anything on Wednesday to fill me with bright optimism for the future. Sure, it was a good performance and a good result but alot of that can be put down to the euphoria of England's new era under Mclaren (and the ineptitude of the opposition).

I wasn't impressed by our front two of D
