Newcastle are a perfect team for Martins, He'll play week in and week out and Newcastle are a prestigous club, That one day might win a cup. But if he's anything like his Nigerian team mate Kanu i suggest Newcastle hide now. Just hope he's like Yakubu ;) :P
Middlesbrough have whacked in another deal for Distin this time upping his weekly wages to what i think is £65,000 a week. We've also prepared a back up plan Ujflasi  The Czech Defender.

I'd like to see Martins at Newcastle tbh. Is it just me or has there been a real influx of world class players in the premiership in the last couple of seasons. I know some people have been saying the Premier League is the best league in the world for some years now because of the money involved but now I think it really is.

You don't know who Ian "The Beast of Barking" Pearce is?
Well, it looks like the Martins deal will finally be completed later this week, with £9m being the reported price-tag. He's a good player, but he alone isn't going to solve our problems. This is why I really hope we push through our interest in Kerzhakov or maybe someone like Klaas Jan Huntelaar.
Also, it seems as though Newcastle might just pull off the impossible and sell Boumsong... to Juventus. We've even managed to trick Juventus into giving us £3m for him... JOY!

Im even happy for the toon to get rid of boumsong.
Martins will give any defence problems and lets hope he can adapt to the style of epl.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(fenix down @ Aug 22 2006, 12:47 AM) </div> Probably one of the worst central defenders in the premiership. He is of the old generation where if you miss the ball, you must then break the players legs to make up for it.
Edit: Regarding the "Hargreaves transfer saga", things have become interesting. It's been announced that some sections of the media have been wildly misquoting Mr. Hargreaves, because while he did say that a move to Man Utd would be a good career move, he also said he is perfectly happy to say in Munich should it not happen, and he is perfectly happy to finish his career in Germany. Hoeness' comments are also probably incorrect with regard to Hargreaves, but that was probably a media tactic to make Man Utd look like the bad guys.
I am actually pretty happy that Bayern are behaving like this, because this is how it should be. Clubs are too weak these days, and usually concede to their players wishes with regards to transfers. It's a shame from his point of view because a move to Man Utd would be a great move for him, but in terms of the bigger picture, it'd be a good thing if he stays.

I haven't seen him play in Germany, but is he better at Germany Or England in the long run?.

Bayern would have been more than happy to have sold Hargreaves to Man Utd for what they were supposedly offering (£17m), but the way United have conducted themselves seems to have really offended Bayern.

Yeah I'm glad Bayern have stuck two fingers up at Man U. Clubs like Man U, Real and more recently Chelsea have been getting away with putting too much pressure on cubs to sell players. I mean what was going on with the John Obi Mikkel transfer? And could Real please piss off talking about Reyes?!?!
Also who the hell at Juve thought it would be a good idea to fork out £3.3m for Boumsong?

The big clubs will always continue to try and push other clubs into selling.
Boumsong well who knows, he might become the best full back in the world at Juve playing in Serie B

I feel like boasting for a bit till someone reminds me who beat us on Saturday B)
We beat the Champions Chelsea 2-1. And we were the better team over the 90 minutes . Viduka had the biggest impact on the game, Yeah i'm talking about Mark Viduka the player who won't play if he's just had a haircut. :P Downing looked impressive and Yakubu just looked distant the full game, Although Chelseas back line was in shatters last nights, Carvalho left Pogatetz completely unmarked for the full game, Ferreira looked in his own world making a world of mistakes even Cudicini was bad.
Although Schwarzer had the game of his life. Fantastic saves from Lampard, Shevchenko, Essien and Drogba. He even managed to get a hand on Shevchenko's shot which took a wicked deflection though sadly still trickled in.
So, Good news for the Aussies.
@Jewell, Klaas Jan Huntelaar didn't he play for Herenveen? I don't know what happened to him, 2 seasons ago, He was playing for Herenveen now he's playing for Ajax and he's in the Dutch national side and scoring within 7 mintues of his debut, I'd love the see him playing premiership football, Even if it is for Newcastle. Though i must say Ameobi is proving to be a quite good player he scored a few goals in pre-season and looked promising against Wigan.
Last night again Referees made some pretty terrible decisions, Poor Reading defender Sonko fell over and was Red Carded although seconds before that he had barged the Villa player, Andy Todd blatantly knocked Andy Johnson over and recieved nothing, Video evidence saved him last time, But not this time. Then Ben Thatcher commiting what can only really be described as one of the worst challenges in premiership history. Hopefully Mendes will recover but it looked as though Thatcher knocked him clean out on the pitch and from the reaction of the Portsmouth player and medical staff. He probaly has a broken or dislocated jaw and a broken cheekbone.

KJ Huntelaar did play for Heerenveen (even scored against us in the UEFA Cup a few seasons ago). He actually came through the academy at Feyenoord but was released as they didn't think he was at their standard. But he has always been regarded as a hot prospect in Holland and now he's realising some of that potential at Ajax and Holland. He would be tailor-made for the Premiership and I'm surprised someone like Man Utd haven't made enquiries about him considering they need a replacement for van Nisterooy.
It was a great result for Boro last night and I'm sort of pleased for you guys as it shows not every team is just willing to lay down and die everytime they come up against a big team. It was very pleasing to see Boro take it to Chelsea throughout the 90 minutes and get their just rewards at the end, despite the ref awarding every single decision to Chelsea.

I knew he scored against Newcastle i just didn't want to bring it up. It was a cracking goal aswell. :P Man U don't really need a replacement for Ruud, They already have Saha, Rooney,Solksjear, Giggs, Park. They're all capable of playing upfront. Plus Man Utd probaly couldn't be arsed with him, He wasn't rated around £30million so Man Utd won't like him. ^_^ Nor will Chelsea or Arsenal. Though he'll probaly be playing for Spurs, Newcastle or Liverpool next season :P
Boro never lay down and let any big team walk all over them, It's not our style. We always take it to Man Utd and most of the time come back with at least a point, We try to take it to Arsenal but we could never beat them not till last season. And again we always take it to Chelsea in fact for about 3 seasons running we've been unlucky not to get a point, Then last season we hammered them and we beat them again.
Boro's style is to let the minnows walk all over them expecting them not to score and nearly every season Middlesbrough have a big upset. Last season we let a 4-1 lead over Norwich slip to a 4-4 draw though that was a good game :P

Yeah I know. That's what I like about Boro, the fact they don't piss themselves against the big sides. It's a pity the same can't be said about teams like Charlton who just let Man Utd stomp all over them last night. I mean how are teams like Newcastle and Tottenham supposed to succeed when the small teams have one attitude towards the top sides and a different one towards us?

People once had the attitude towards Newcastle i used to hate seeing the Boro V Newcastle scoreline when Bobby Robson was in charge, Because you'se always trampled us. The minute Greame Souness took over is when people attitude to Newcastle changed. -_- Newcastle were once top 5 finishers every season, In fact i can remember about 4 years ago watching Newcastle vs Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions league. I think Newcastle won then about a week later they were hammered by Inter Milan :P
And of course, We all hope Sir Bobby Robson has a quick and speedy recovery.

Well it appears that Hoeness is one German without a sense of humour as he has continued to insult Hargreaves. He has now labelled him a "prostitute", lol.
I find it hard to believe that Arsenal would settle for £12m for Reyes, that's not the Wenger style. That would effectively mean a loss, which is like unthinkable from his perspective.
It was indeed funny to see Chelski lose to Boro, but the quote of the day comes with regard to Ben Thatchers foul...
"Stuart Pearce has conceded that Ben Thatchers foul was indeed a foul".
Also, this is quite strange...
"Greater Manchester Police are also preparing to investigate the incident after receiving a number of calls following the Premiership game, meaning Thatcher could potentially be charged with assault.
"Greater Manchester Police has received a number of complaints from members of the public following an incident in which a player was injured during the Manchester City vs Portsmouth match on Wednesday 23 August 2006," read a statement. "
So, surely people can report ANY foul and it has to be investigated by the police. How stupid is that?

The same thing happened with the Dyer-Bowyer incident a few years back but nothing came of it in the end.
I've been watching replays of it on SkySports news and it does look very bad. Thatcher clearly went in to hurt the player... poor Mendes even had to stay in hospital overnight, lol. BTW, who was it that came out with that qoute about Pearce accepting it was a foul?
Squire, this following question is aimed solely at you:
What did it feel like when Manchester United beat Forest 8-1 at the City Ground, in the season you got relegated? I ask this question in complete seriousness, so please don't feel like I'm trying to ridicule you. It's something that has always interested me, an exploration into the mood and psyche of a football fan, so to speak. I've never had the experience myself (Newcastle have had some batterings over the years but nothing that bad).

Firstly, the quote from Pearce was on Sky Sports News as like an introduction to the mainstory. I thought it was quite funny. :)
Concerning 8-1 defeat. It was actually an interesting situation for many reasons. Firstly, I had been out all day and didn't know until I was coming home in the car with my friends, one of which was infact a Man Utd supporter...I can't say that football bothers me as much as others though. I just thought it was very ironic that we were infact the people who held the record previously (beating Sheffield Wednesday 7-1 away) so for us to then be on the receiving end, heh.
I think if I had actually been there witnessing it, it would have been 10x worse, thats for sure.
