Square-Enix

The June issue of Game Informer has an eight page feature on Square Enix's upcoming RPG The Last Remnant. It features new image and a wealth of story and character details, as well as a look at the game's combat system.

"One thousand years ago, humanity came into contact with remnants. These magical fragments of a bygone era were once used to promote peace across the world. Soon, as the rift grew between those who ruled and those who obeyed, the remnants ceased being instruments of balance, and instead became paths to immeasurable power. Where once had been peace, only bloodshed remained."

The game will feature two prominent characters... one meant to appeal to Japanese gamers, and the other intended for the North American audience. Rush Sykes is the former. He is an 18 year old swordsman who is described as energetic and idealistic. For the American audience, is a figure known only as The Conqueror. Described as dark and mysterious, he is battle-hardened and very much the polar opposite of Rush.

The game will not force players to choose between the two... Rush is the game's primary protagonist. Director Hiroshi Takai says that there will be a lot of plot twist involving him, and that these twists will likely change the players perception of the character as they progress through the game. Rush has a connection to The Conqueror, but what that connection is remains a mystery.

The Conqueror is said to be a "dark hero", who holds a great deal of cruelty within him. He has made it his mission to collect as many Remnants as he can, though his motives have not been revealed.

A third character is also mentioned. He is a young man with a mechanical eyepatch, who was seen in command of a cannon-like Remnant.

The story begins in Rush's home, the island of Eulam. When Rush's sister Irina is kidnapped by a mysterious organization, Rush finds himself pulled into a conflict somehow connected to the powerful relics known as Remnants.

One the subject of the Remnants themselves, Game Informer describes them as being a "key part of practically every element of the world." Their size and shape can vary... they can be machines, beasts, weapons. Takai says that humans came into contact with them about 1000 years ago, and built up settlements around them.

One such Remnant is the Valeria Heart (a sword the size of a small mountain) which is surrounded by the town of Athlum, bestows courage upon those around it, and is responsible for the area's water supply.

The Last Remnant will incorporate four main races: the Mithra (similar to humans), the Yama (a fish-like people with great physical strength), the Qsiti (lizard-like beings adept at magic), and the Sovanni (Cat-like creatures with four arms, able to weild multiple weapons).

The combat system for the game will entail directing battles between opposing armies. Players will have to act and adapt as the situation dictates... however, fighting will still incorperate some of Square's usual turn-based system. Players will fight in groups of five called Unions, and differnet characters will have different abilities (think Radiata Stories).

The Morale meter will play a role in battle as well, and the level of the Union's morale will influence character effectiveness in battle.

The game is set for a spring 2008 release simultaneously in Japan and North America on PS3 and Xbox 360.
